I have to communicate with my husband about school days, my work schedule, doctor’s appointments and field trip plans. Don’t get stuck in the rut of thinking that homeschooling has to look like a traditional school setting. Learning can happen at any time, not just Mondays through Fridays, 9AM until 3PM.

Even if I were a full-time, stay-at-home mom, we would not be doing a lot of extra activities. But, working afternoons makes even the few activities we are interested in difficult. If one of the children is interested in something, we will find a way to make it work. I may have to ask an extended family member to take them, rearrange my work hours occasionally, or use a personal day. It’s hard, but the rewards are so very worth it. I’d take a look at some of the tips in this article, and if you have more specific questions, I’ll be happy to offer my two cents worth.

You don’t have to be married and homeschool, but it’s helpful if you have someone who is willing to help you. If you have a spouse, get them on board with the whole homeschooling thing. Having your spouse’s help can be a true lifesaver. You can each take turns teaching the kids. Discipline is about learning yourself and your child’s triggers. There were times I had to give my kids and myself a break.
You may want to enlist the help of relatives or consider hiring reliable childcare. Parents of teens may decide that their kids can stay home alone during the parents’ working hours. Maturity level and security concerns should be taken into serious consideration, but it is often a viable option for a mature, self-motivated teen. While I’m not a “working” mom (hey, I just cook, clean, do laundry, teach, chauffeur, you know!), I found this article to be incredibly encouraging. I think ALL moms can benefit from the practical tips you’ve shared. I’m actually lucky enough to know Shawn in person; we used to work together, and I’ve long considered her someone worth emulating.
Right now those are done entirely from home, though during non-COVID times, I work three days a week in the office at my full-time job, an hour from home. My wife, Kaitlyn, has exactly the same situation (because we have the same jobs!), and Chris, my son’s dad and our housemate, is working entirely from home right now too. Homeschooling parents, REGARDLESS of job status, who feel like there’s never enough time in the day for themselves, their spouse, their friends or their house. When you want to homeschool, but you work outside of the home, think outside of the box. You don’t need to make your child sit there for 8 hours a day. Modify the homeschooling schedule that fits your needs.

Taking care of mom is a huge one since mom often gets lost in the shuffle. I DO work outside the home along with homeschooling three of my small children. It’s not a piece of cake, but I’ll show you how I manage. If there's still too much for everyone, consider what you may be able to hire out. Perhaps just having someone clean your bathrooms once a week would lighten the load or maybe you need to hire someone to maintain the lawn.
We all have days that we just don’t want to do anything, so I had to be able to allow us to take those breaks. Some days I get up from the homeschool table to leave immediately for work. Most days I get very little housework done.
I should be in bed but instead, I chat with a mom on Facebook about homeschooling and the exhausting day she’s had. We swap life with teen stories and then I close up. Happy we’ve been able to connect, after all knowing you are not alone is a big reason of why I do what I do. After supper, the dishes are done (again!) I clean up and make the coffee for tomorrow. Happily, tomorrow is a full school day and I don’t have to leave the house.
They’ll support you through the highs and the lows. Holidays are also a great time to really catch up as needed. You won’t need to take every single holiday and not have fun. Kids don’t need seven hours straight of schoolwork. You can do like an hour or two and then you’re off for the rest of the day. On the weekend, we finish any work that wasn’t done as planned during the week. We check in with them during the day by either dropping home for lunch, skyping, or texting. We also use various curriculums that teach the same subjects to solidify the topics of Math, English, and Writing. We used Sue Patrick’s workbox system, we had to use a curriculum that taught our kids for us and in which we just reviewed the work, and helped.
If you prefer paper, have a big calendar in a central area in the house so everyone is up to speed. We’re moving slowly toward me staying at home, but for now, this schedule works for us. People often assume that I’m a stay at home mom.
